The Situation:

Act III of Macbeth is where it all starts to come unravelled for our intrepid hero. He sends murderers to kill Banquo and Fleance, and then is almost immediately confronted by his BFF's ghost at a feast, which results in some enjoyably twitchy awkwardness.

It all seems fairly straightforward, except for one thing: the mysterious appearance of a third murderer in Act III sc iii. Once again, Shakespeare has decided to toy with us, and give us what seems to be an unsolvable puzzle: Who is the Third Murderer?

The interwebz will lead you to several suspects (Macbeth himself, Lady Mac, Lennox, Ross...one badly supported student essay online is certain that it's Macduff, and another fairly legitimate seeming article will suggest that he's not really a man at all, but the physical manifestation of Macbeth's paranoid willpower), so there's not much joy to be had in just Googling it. Guess you'll just have to hash it out amongst yourselves and make up your own mind.

The Assignment:

a) In an informally written blog post of about 500 words, choose a suspect for the Third Murderer and attempt to prove, using evidence from the play itself and your native wits, that your suspect is the most likely candidate.

b) Make specific references to the text (plot elements, speech patterns, quotations, etc.) to support your theory. You may also make reference to life, movies, other things you've read, etc., so long as it's relevant and supports your idea. Be sure to cite or quote your supporting material.

c) Finally, somewhere in your blog you must make a detailed comment about at least one classmate's posting, agreeing, disagreeing, or taking the discussion in a different direction.

Who is the thrid murder ? Nada khairi


Who is the Third Murder?

    Act 4 of Macbeth left the audience with a huge mystery. After the two murderers meet in the forest they are joined by a third that is never identified. There are many different reasons why many characters would be the third murder. But I believe that the main suspect should be Macbeth.

Macbeth showed up to the banquet right before the hitmen.So he could have easily met them in the forest and hurried back to the banquet before them as he is known to be a fast rider. The third murder says “Almost a mile, but he does usually—/So all men do—from hence to the palace gate/Make it their walk.”(iii.iii.16-180) So the third murder knows Banquo’s usually day to day movements like Macbeth would.

Also when Macbeth arrives to the banquet he is very flustered and dilusonal and even though he ordered men to kill Banquo. I don’t think he would have been acting this bad unless he himself witnessed his best friends murder. Macbeth being the third murderer would also explain why he would picture Banquo’s ghost so vividly, he says “Never shake/Thy gory locks at me”(lll.iv.62-63).

After Duncan’s murder, Macbeth has been very anxious and paranoid about keeping the throne. He says “Ere we will eat our meal in fear, and sleep/In the affliction of these terrible dreams.”(lll.ii.20-21). So he has been having nightmares and terrible anxiety after Duncan died. Even though Macbeth hired two murders he could have had second thoughts about it not working and disguised himself to go make sure everything goes well as he now has a controlling and paranoid personality.

When the first murderer took out the light and Fleance escaped the third murder, being Macbeth, was angry. Macbeth knew that killing Fleance is as important as Banquo which is why he was so angry when he escaped.
Some of my fellow classmates said that the third murderer is Hecate. But in the play the first murder is the one that takes out the light. The third murder says “Who did strike out the light?”(lll.iii.27) and the first murder responds with “Was ’t not the way?”(lll.iii.28). So it was the first murder strikes out the light causing Fleance to escape. If it was Hecate's mission to let Fleance escape she as the third murder wasn't even the one that accomplished this as it was the first murderer that comprised the mission. I also think if she is the all powerful goddess of death then there are many ways to accomplish this without having to go out herself like casting spells or other magical powers.

Macbeth is a ruthless killer after killing his own cousin he could easily be capable of killing his best friend. With all these different hints and clues the main suspect should be Macbeth.
